Migraines

Hi there,

According to the Migraine Research Foundation, migraine affects over 39 million Americans and 1 billion individuals worldwide. It is the 3rd most prevalent illness in the world, and 1 in 4 U.S. households includes someone who experiences migraine. Based on these staggering statistics, chances are that you or someone you know suffers with migraines. The most common Western medical treatment for migraine is pharmaceutical medications, but alternative treatments are a viable option too! Research has shown that both acupuncture and traditional Chinese herbal medicine are effective at both migraine treatment and prevention. And in addition to pain, acupuncture can also help with some other common migraine symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, constipation, neck stiffness, and sensitivity to light and sound. So consider giving acupuncture a try before your next migraine - the AOMA Clinics are here to help!

TCM Eating for the Season

Beet, Raspberry, & Strawberry Smoothie

Our June recipe of the month comes from MigraineReliefRecipes.com, a great website created by Stephanie Weaver, MPH, CWHC. Not only are smoothies the perfect meal or snack for the Texas summers, but this particular one is full of healthy foods and can be adapted to be more migraine-diet friendly!

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 cups milk of your choice
  • 6-8 ice cubes
  • 2 tbsp maca powder
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cacao nibs (omit for migraine diet)
  • 2 tbsp buckwheat flour
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 2 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 2 small red beets, or one large red beet
  • 2 handfuls raspberries (omit for migraine diet)
  • 3-4 handfuls strawberries

Instructions:

  1. Scrub the beets and remove the greens. Reserve the greens for another use or add them to the smoothie (not too many leaves). Cut off the little tail and the top and put the beet in chunks into the blender.
  2. Wash the berries and add to the blender. You can leave the strawberry tops on if they are fresh.
  3. Add all the other ingredients to the blender. Blend on high until smooth.

Meet the clinic staff!

Jesus Hernandez

I recently started my journey at AOMA in January of 2021 as a student. In March I was granted the opportunity to become part of the AOMA staff at the North clinic. As a student of life, I was drawn to a different experience and desired an environment and community that would encourage my values in healing and being of service to others. In my past, I had the opportunity to experience working and learning with a neuropsychologist and neurosurgeon, and in that encounter, I saw and felt how the conventional Western health system would treat individuals. As a yoga and reiki practitioner, my heart desired to proceed to the next opportunity to grow and develop.

My journey at AOMA has just started and I have only been on campus a few times during the pandemic, but for the class that I attended in person, the campus feels like a magnificent learning environment. Hopefully, soon we can attend most of our classes in person to experience the full AOMA reality. My favorite part of working at AOMA is experiencing all the beautiful and talented individuals! Our community provides an opportunity for everybody to shine and that is just a delightful experience to know that you are in an environment that supports your values!

In my personal healing experience, acupuncture made a huge difference in my health. During the years of 2017-2019, I would travel to Houston quite often to get treatments for my back pain. During that time, I noticed a huge difference in my health, and I started to see and feel the benefit of acupuncture. I did not have any experience of herbal medicine and tuina until I started at AOMA.

My parents are still together after 32 years of their marriage and even through the thick and thin, I am glad that I have parents who showed me not to give up on others so easily. I have an older brother and two little sisters. I currently do not have any pets of my own, but I do live with 3 dogs and 2 cats. In my free time, I tend to take care of my overall health. I'm constantly at the gym and I have a daily yoga practice. I love art and music and I'm always seeking new experiences in nature. I tend to be super busy during the week, but these interests keep me sane!

I want AOMA’s patients to know that I am here to be of service to those who need assistance. My journey has not been an easy one, with all the conditioning that occurred with my adolescence, but what I did learn is that I want to just provide an environment of healing for those who seek it.
